Title : Pain of Paying — A Metaphor Gone Literal : Evidence from Neurobiology and Behavioral Decision Making

چکیده
How do individuals perceive paying for goods? Recent behavioral economic theories of purchases suggest a hedonic process underlying the act of paying—that is, that individuals experience a displeasure of paying. We investigated this idea in three incentive-compatible experiments. First, we conducted a brain imaging study, which suggested that there exists a displeasure of paying akin to a higher-order, affective pain. Building on this result, we next

Neuroeconomics: a bridge for translational research.
Neuroeconomic methods combine behavioral economic experiments to parameterize aspects of reward-related decision-making with neuroimaging techniques to record corresponding brain activity. In this introductory article to the current special issue, we propose that neuroeconomics is a potential bridge for translational research in psychiatry for several reasons. First, neuroeconomics-derived theo...
متن کاملHow Effective Is the Use of Metaphor Therapy on Reducing Psychological Symptoms and Pain Discomfort in Patients with Non-Cardiac Chest Pain: A Randomized, Controlled Trial
Introduction: Psychological symptoms of non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP) including perceptual, emotional, and behavioral problems can effect patient perception of chest pain. This study was conducted to determine the effect of metaphor therapy on mitigating depression, anxiety, stress, and pain discomfort in patients with NCCP. Materials and Methods: This randomized, controlled, trial was conducte...
متن کاملNeuronal Correlates of Decision Making
Decision making involves selection from sets of options based on current evidence about the state of the world and estimates of the value or utility of different outcomes. The neural correlates of evidence assessment that guide simple perceptual judgments are now well understood, and we argue that this process can serve as a simple model for organizing behavioral and neural correlates of decisi...
متن کاملDefining and Assessing Animal Pain
The detection and assessment of pain in animals is crucial to improving their welfare in a variety of contexts in which humans are ethically or legally bound to do so. Thus clear standards to judge whether pain is likely to occur in any animal species is vital to inform whether to alleviate pain or to drive the refinement of procedures to reduce invasiveness, thereby minimizing pain. We define ...
متن کاملBehavioral Economics and Psychology of Incentives
Monetary incentives can backfire while nonstandard interventions, such as framing, can be effective in influencing behavior. I review the empirical evidence on these two sets of anomalies. Paying for inherently interesting tasks, paying for prosocial behavior, paying too much, paying too little, and providing too many options can all be counterproductive. At the same time, proper design of the ...
